Andy Carroll reveals he was sexually assaulted by male celebrity in his home

Andy Carroll has revealed he was sexually assaulted by a man who was later jailed.

The former Liverpool and Newcastle United striker detailed the attack by a “celebrity mate” of his former wife in his autobiography, Owning It, which was released on Thursday.

The incident took place at his home in 2021, hours after he had played a match for Newcastle. The friend of Carroll’s ex-wife, Billi Mucklow, invited himself to their house to watch a boxing match, and the footballer began to feel uncomfortable in his presence.

Carroll wrote that he took himself to bed after “a few drinks”, wondering: “Has he slipped me something?” He later woke to find the man attempting to perform oral sex on him, and threw his attacker out of the house.

When the man tried to re-enter, Carroll punched him unconscious before calling the police and “sobbing”.

The attacker denied sexual assault and stood trial. Carroll testified in court, which he found to be “humiliating and embarrassing and absolutely horrendous”.

The man was found guilty of sexual offences. He was sentenced to three years in prison, placed on the Sex Offender Register and banned from entering the village where Carroll lived.

“I’d think about it every day, making it difficult to focus on anything else, including football,” he wrote. “The trauma of what happened to me hasn’t gone away.”

Carroll said he only included the attack in his book “at the last minute” after discussing it with his girlfriend, Lou Teasdale.

“I was sexually assaulted, there I said it,” he wrote. “Scary to talk about but it’s made the person I am today as much as any of the good stuff. And if me talking about it helps just one person then good it will have been worth it.”

Carroll, 37, now co-owns and plays for National League South club Dagenham and Redbridge, having briefly managed the team last season.

He is due to stand trial in January after pleading not guilty to breaching a non-molestation order, having been accused of repeatedly calling his ex-wife.
