2 floors of Rumsey Street car park to close for 6 weeks for Interpol meeting use

A public multi-storey car park in Hong Kong’s central business district will be partially closed for about six weeks from November as the city prepares to host a meeting of Interpol’s top governing body for the first time.

Hong Kong police plan to take over the seventh and eighth floors of the Rumsey Street car park in Sheung Wan to set up a traffic coordination command centre.

“The centre is planned to accommodate 240 electric cars to be used by participants of Interpol’s general assembly travelling to and from the airport, hotels and meeting venues,” the police force said in a paper to be tabled for discussion at a meeting of Central and Western District Council next Thursday.

“The seventh and eighth floors of the car park will be used as a traffic coordination command centre from November 1, 2026. After the general assembly concludes, it will reopen to the public on December 12.”

The car park was chosen because it was on Hong Kong Island and close to hotels and the meeting venue, “which is conducive to the coordination and dispatch of vehicles” for the conference, police said.

The 94th Interpol general assembly will be held from November 30 to December 3 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.
