Infantino Calls for FIFA Governance Overhaul Amid Intense Backlash

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has initiated moves for a comprehensive governance review within world football’s governing body, following a wave of intense backlash from member associations, leagues, and fan organizations.

The mounting pressure stems from recent administrative decisions and calendar congestions that have drawn heavy criticism across the global game.

In response to growing demands for greater transparency and accountability, Infantino signaled that the organization must evaluate its internal frameworks to better serve the international football community.

Speaking on the need for structural assessment, Infantino emphasized that open dialogue and adaptation are vital for the sport’s future:

“First, I will ask ‌the Council whether it wishes to commission an independent external review of FIFA’s current governance framework ‌for major strategic initiatives and recommend potential improvements,” Infantino wrote to the ‌FIFA Council and all 211 member association presidents in a letter seen by Reuters.

“I recognise that, without the full context, this caused concern and created the impression that decisions ‌had already been taken. They had not.”

“It remained a proposal, not a decision, and was always subject to the necessary approvals of the Council and the Member Associations. It has now been withdrawn and will not proceed.

“My role is not to pre-judge that discussion. Those who support a particular model should have the opportunity to set ‌out their case clearly.

“No association’s treatment will depend on its position ⁠on any proposal or institutional matter.

“I remain fully committed ‌to leading FIFA and confident in what we can achieve together.”

The proposed review is expected to tackle key operational policies and decision-making procedures, as FIFA attempts to mend relationships with key stakeholders ahead of upcoming congresses.
