Army joins Pertamina to secure Bali fuel distribution amid shortage

Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) - The Udayana military command is helping Pertamina secure fuel distribution in Bali after shortages and long vehicle queues at gas stations across the resort island.
"In principle, Kodam IX/Udayana supports necessary measures to maintain security and order during fuel distribution," said Col. Amrizal Nasution, the command's information chief, in Denpasar on Thursday.
The move aims to maintain order and prevent disputes among residents, he said. He urged the public to queue in an orderly manner and avoid panic buying.
Cooperation among all parties is needed to keep the situation safe and calm, he added. The support followed a Wednesday meeting at the command headquarters between Pertamina CEO Simon Aloysius Mantiri and regional commander Maj. Gen. Piek Budyakto.
Pertamina asked for troops to help secure fuel distribution at several Bali gas stations. Soldiers on site are expected to head off security disruptions, help control queues and prevent clashes among motorists or with station staff.
Budyakto welcomed the request and pledged support for keeping fuel distribution smooth. He said the security backing should help create orderly conditions so services run safely and smoothly. Long queues earlier formed at several Bali gas stations, fueling public worry about fuel stocks.
After a meeting with Bali's governor at the Pesanggaran depot in Denpasar on Tuesday, Mantiri said a delayed fuel tanker ship had disrupted distribution schedules.
The vessel ran into problems while anchoring, pushing its arrival past schedule, and affecting deliveries to parts of Bali.
Mantiri said the explanation was not meant as an excuse, and apologized for the shortages in recent days. He stressed the need to maximize service so fuel needs are met and distribution returns to normal.
