The View's Alyssa Farah Griffin Details Her Baby's Skull Surgery
Pregnant Alyssa Farah Griffin Explains 3-Day Absence From 'The View'
Alyssa Farah Griffin recently experienced the "scariest moment" of her life.
The View co-host shared that her and husband Justin Griffin's baby boy Justin Patrick Griffin Jr. underwent a skull operation to treat the then-3-month-old's "not common" bone condition, though it was admittedly "terrifying as a new parent."
"He had to have craniofacial surgery, which is performed by a neurosurgeon," Alyssa explained on the morning show's Behind the Table podcast Sept. 23. "It's actually surgery on the skull."
Her son, now 7 months old, was experiencing craniosynostosis—a condition the CDC says can happen when the spaces between a baby's skull bones prematurely close before turning 2, which can ultimately cause their head to take on an abnormal shape as their brain continues to grow inside it.
As Alyssa put it, according to her son's doctors, "the skull can fuse together" while simultaneously "the brain can grow into it," which could've resulted in "physical" and "developmental" strain for their baby.
As such, the former White House strategist applauded how her son's pediatrician identified the concern before it progressed further.
"She saw just a slight inconsistency in his head and said, 'You need to go see a neurosurgeon soon,'" Alyssa recounted. "Because if you do it at 3 months, it's a less invasive surgery, and you have time to correct it before it could be more significant and harder for him to heal from."
And now that her little one has "made a perfect full recovery," the talk show anchor has taken an important lesson to heart.
"Trust your partner, but also trust your community," she said. "I think that doctors and nurses are absolute angels."

Though she confessed that "knowing he was going under when he's this little boy," as well as "having to sign off on him getting a blood transfusion" was indeed the "scariest moment of my life," she continued, "that's the moment where you have to trust the people who know better."
