Ministry targets data centers, energy storage as downstreaming markets

Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) - The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry targeted the development of data centers and energy storage as markets for Indonesia’s mineral downstreaming program during 2026-2030.

“Approaching 2030, demand will increasingly be influenced by electric vehicles, energy storage, electronics, renewable energy, power grid development, and data centers,” the ministry's mineral and coal cooperation and investment coordinator Yan Abrar said at the Indonesia-Korea Energy Forum (IKEF) here on Wednesday.

Abrar said Indonesia wants to prioritize downstreaming for projects that are commercially viable, environmentally responsible, and linked to real industry needs.

The setting of downstreaming priority criteria was driven by awareness that investment is influenced by trade policy, financing, and ever-higher demands to meet environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards.

Therefore, the government is mapping potential markets that will be targets for Indonesia’s mineral downstreaming products.

“Indonesia applies downstreaming selectively, not downstreaming without economic consideration,” Abrar said.

On the occasion, he also gave an overview of Indonesia’s mineral production. As of September 2023, Indonesia produced 23.43 million tons of bauxite ore, 57.24 kilotons (kt) of tin ore, and 34.6 kt of refined tin.

It also produced 114.9 million tons of copper ore, 1.47 million tons of copper concentrate and 257 kt of cathode, 225.3 million tons of nickel ore, 419.08 kt of ferronickel, and 60.81 kt of nickel matte.

Indonesia’s nickel production is concentrated in North Maluku at 38 percent, Southeast Sulawesi at 36 percent, and Central Sulawesi at 21 percent.

“However, production volume alone does not guarantee competitiveness. We must also address several operational and structural challenges, such as extreme weather, shipping disruptions, and inter-island logistics that affect timeliness,” Abrar said.
