Pretoria hit by hail As Gauteng braces for more severe weather

Gauteng residents have been warned to brace for a wet and stormy Monday, with severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and hail expected across parts of the province.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an Orange Level 1 warning for severe thunderstorms in some areas, urging residents to take precautions.

By Monday afternoon, parts of Pretoria had already experienced hail and heavy rainfall, with further unsettled weather expected as a cold front approaches the province on Tuesday.

SAWS has advised residents in affected areas to remain cautious, particularly when travelling.

Residents have been urged to avoid crossing low-lying bridges and to take extra care on the roads, especially in areas experiencing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

The weather service advised motorists to remain alert to rapidly changing road conditions, as heavy rain could result in flooding and reduced visibility.

According to SAWS, the severe weather could lead to localised flooding of roads and informal settlements, major traffic disruptions, structural damage, fallen trees and power outages.

More rainfall is expected across Gauteng throughout Monday evening and into Tuesday, with residents urged to monitor weather updates and warnings.

According to AccuWeather, a cold front is expected to hit Gauteng on Tuesday, with temperatures dropping into the low teens. There is a 30% chance of rain, with Johannesburg forecast to reach a maximum of just 14°C.
