Indonesia reaffirms unwavering support for Palestine to Al-Aqsa Imam

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar reaffirmed the Indonesian government and people’s commitment to supporting Palestine and its right to pursue independence.

“Indonesia will always and forever stand with Palestine,” the minister said in Jakarta on Friday.

He made the statement during a meeting with Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, Grand Mufti of Al-Quds and Imam of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Palestine, and Mahmoud Al-Habbash, Advisor to the President of the Palestinian Authority for Religious Affairs and Supreme Sharia Judge.

Both officials are in Indonesia to attend the 2026 International Grand Imam Conference (IGIC), which is being held at the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta from Sept. 25 to 28, 2026.

Unlike typical diplomatic forums, IGIC 2026 is designed as a global religious platform for discussions on humanitarian issues, including the Palestinian question and the country’s pursuit of independence.

During the meeting, Umar reaffirmed the Indonesian government and people’s commitment to supporting the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people.

For Indonesia, supporting Palestine is not merely a matter of foreign policy, but also a humanitarian responsibility and a constitutional mandate, he said.

“Palestinian independence is a non-negotiable matter, and we at the Ministry of Religious Affairs are committed to translating this support into concrete steps with direct impact on the future of Palestine’s young generation,” he said.

As part of this commitment, the Indonesian government has allocated higher education scholarships for Palestinian students to study at leading universities in Indonesia, including State Islamic Religious Universities (PTKIN) and other partner universities.

“We aim to realize long-term investment for Palestine by improving the capacity of its human resources. This scholarship is a bridge of knowledge and solidarity, enabling Palestinian youth to build a solid intellectual foundation to rebuild and lead their homeland,” Umar said.

Sheikh Muhammad Hussein is scheduled to deliver a special address and lead a global peace dialogue at the 2026 IGIC, where he will discuss the situation in Palestine and its pursuit of independence.

The participation of the Palestinian officials at Istiqlal Mosque is expected by organizers to raise awareness among religious leaders worldwide and encourage cross-border solidarity in addressing the humanitarian situation.

IGIC 2026 will bring together prominent scholars and religious leaders for discussions on peace and issues affecting the Muslim world, including support for the Palestinian people’s right to independence.
