KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 — Chinese star Cheng Lei got up close with Malaysian fans yesterday when he took the stage at Sunway Velocity Mall here for the iQIYI Starship 2026 fan engagement event.

The How Dare You!? actor entertained fans with games and interactions throughout the event, sharing heartfelt moments with the crowd, many of whom left smiling after getting the chance to see him in person.

Following the event, Cheng spoke to members of the media at TGV Cinemas in the same mall, where the possibility of returning to Malaysia for a future filming project was among the highlights of the conversation.

“I would be open to participating in more international productions and would love the opportunity to film in Malaysia, particularly because of the country’s beautiful scenery,” he said.

Asked if there was a genre he had yet to explore, Cheng said he preferred not to limit himself to any specific type of role, choosing instead to stay open to different opportunities and keep challenging himself as an actor.

“Every character feels like meeting a new friend and experiencing a different life,” he said.

With his Malaysia visit also giving him the chance to experience the country beyond the fan event, Cheng was asked what he would like to take home with him to China.

“It would be difficult to choose just one,” he said.

“I would love to capture Malaysia’s beautiful scenery through photography, enjoy and remember the local food, and take home the warmth and enthusiasm I felt from Malaysian fans,” he added.

Cheng recently wrapped filming on his latest C-drama, The Leading Star, which is scheduled for release soon.

His other dramas, including My Journey to You and How Dare You!?, are available on iQIYI and have attracted a following among Malaysian viewers.

As iQIYI International Global Ambassador, Cheng said he was honoured to have a platform that allowed him to meet audiences from different countries and connect with fans around the world.

“Despite different cultural backgrounds, I believe film and television can bring people together and create meaningful connections,” he said.
