Warning! This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for VisionQuest episode 1 and 2.

VisionQuest is off to an action-packed start with a two-episode premiere wrapping up with a tragic end for one longtime MCU staple. While much of the Multiverse Saga has had a scatter-gun approach to storytelling and introduced a wide range of characters who have yet to return, the Maximoff Saga has been an impressively coherent through line.

Now, five years on from WandaVision's debut on Disney+, Paul Bettany returns in the role of Vision, but not quite as we have known him in the years gone by. And in an effort to make sense of his own life and purpose, this Vision has surrounded himself with familiar AIs to help him understand the world, and to unlock the secrets to understanding the emotions he appears to have lost.

Unfortunately, by the end of episode 2, one of these dear friends is tragically lost when Vision comes under attack. But, the true scale of this profound loss requires a deeper dive to fully appreciate.

JARVIS Sacrifices Himself To Save The Vision & The Other AIs

James DArcy as Edwin Jarvis in Agent Carter S2

For longstanding fans of the MCU, Paul Bettany has been the voice of JARVIS, the artificial intelligence that assists Tony Stark, since 2008s Iron Man. However, JARVIS was inspired by a real-life individual who was very familiar with the Stark family long before Tony was even born. And this is reinforced in VisionQuest, as James D'Arcy tackles the role of the human face and voice of JARVIS, reprising a character he has played a handful of times already in the MCU.

D'Arcy first took on the role in Agent Carter, where he appears alongside a much younger Howard Stark, as played by Dominic Cooper. Then, in 2019, D'Arcy returned to the role where he appeared alongside a slightly older Howard, played by John Slattery. Here, this legacy of Edwin Jarvis, an employee to the family and a close confidante and friend of Howard Stark's is honored by Vision integrating this AI into his own system.

Tragically, however, when Vision is fatally wounded, Ultron suggests the others could save him if someone chose to self-sacrifice. Living up to his namesake, JARVIS volunteers almost immediately, and clears the way for the others to survive through his selfless actions.

Tommy's Powers Are Erratic Since Inhabiting A New Body

Billy and Tommy Maximoff as Wiccan and Speed in Halloween costumes in WandaVision

Outside of Vision's head, his family is starting to expand once again as he reunites with Tommy. But, it's clear that Tommy, who now seems to go by Thomas, is afraid of Vision and the memories in his head. This is down to the fact that Tommy Maximoff was originally a magical entity created by Wanda, alongside his twin brother.

Through some mysterious circumstance, both Billy and Tommy have managed to inhabit other bodies, and these stories are now playing out in Agatha All Along, and VisionQuest respectively. Tommy is now a young man by the name of Thomas Shepherd, and as such, he's struggling to reconcile two sets of memories in his mind.

This also means that while Tommy as a boy could use his superspeed with a level of control, Thomas is struggling to get his powers under control. We see him use them, often unintentionally, throughout the first two episodes, with little understanding of what is happening.

Why Is The Ship Of Theseus Paradox Mentioned?

Vision and White Vision coming to an agreement, with Vision touching White Vision's forehead, in WandaVision

Of course, Thomas isn't the only character suffering through an identity crisis in VisionQuest. Vision has repeatedly referenced the Ship of Theseus Paradox, originally at the end of WandaVision, and now in the first two episodes of VisionQuest.

This paradox illustrates the idea of a boat that is rebuilt and restored over time, until no parts of the original boat remain, but all of the new pieces are exactly the same, and in the same order. Evidently, Vision feels there is a comparison to be made between the old Vision and the new White Vision created by SWORD.

Both share their memories, but the new Vision lacks the emotion of his predecessor. Interestingly, it is Ultron who points out that the paradox is an ineffective measure to try and figure out his own identity, as it focuses too much on a philosophical question and avoids the truth of the situation. This pushes Vision to act bravely and boldly like King Theseus of old, and save Tommy, regardless of his own identity.

Who Hired Paladin To Track Down Vision?

Tommy has been captured by the incredibly efficient bounty hunter, Paladin. Now, while Paladin is clearly an elite killer, and he is equipped with weapons capable of outmatching Vision, the presence of this killer only points to some other greater antagonist pulling the strings behind the scenes.

In the first two episodes of VisionQuest, we hear Paladin speaking to his employer, through an obviously digitally altered speaking voice. Still, this raises serious questions about whom the mystery employer could be. At numerous points in the episode, there is mention of a brutal murderer nicknamed the Birdbutcher, which is likely setting the stage for another character in this story.

Otherwise, when Vision and his brain trust discuss who could be behind Paladin and his use of weapons capable of wounding Vision, FRIDAY suggests it could be SWORD, who may be looking to recover the asset that they lost, aka, Vision. Whatever the case, someone else is in charge and hot on Vision's tail.

The MCU Proved Vibranium Is No Match For Adamantium Bullets

Vision in human form in VisionQuest

Finally, episode two's final moments see Vision and Paladin go head-to-head, when Paladin unleashes powerful rounds of bullets that appear to tear through Vision's vibranium body. Previously, the incredible resilience of vibranium has resulted in the material being regarded as seemingly indestructible.

Question 1 of 3

But, Paladin's adamantium bullets clearly do the job when it comes to trying to dismantle Vision by force. In Marvel Comics, vibranium and adamantium are thought to be two of the most durable materials on the planet. Adamantium is the same material that coats Wolverine's claws and skeleton, while vibranium has been a rich resource used by the Wakandans.

Now, we have confirmation that vibranium does have a weakness in adamantium, and when these seemingly unbreakable materials come into contact, they are capable of completely obliterating one another. But, thanks to JARVIS' sacrifice, Vision has a chance to survive, as the rest of his story unfolds in the remaining episodes of VisionQuest.
