PETALING JAYA, Oct 10 — A man in his 30s was shot and injured by police before being arrested after allegedly driving dangerously and crashing into several vehicles while attempting to flee in Petaling Jaya yesterday.
Sinar Harian reported Petaling Jaya police chief ACP Shamsudin Mamat as saying the incident occurred at about 6.42pm along Persiaran Mahogani towards Sungai Buloh, after a police patrol car pursued the suspect’s Proton Wira.
“The suspect suffered injuries after being hit by shots fired by police,” Shamsudin was quoted as saying in a statement today.
He said a police patrol officer involved in the incident was also injured and received hospital treatment.
Videos circulating on social media showed a car being pursued by a police patrol vehicle before colliding with several other vehicles, after which the driver was seen fleeing on foot while being chased by police officers.
Shamsudin said police found drugs and a toy weapon resembling a pistol on the suspect, while a urine test has yet to be conducted as the man remains under medical treatment.
Police checks also found that the suspect had 10 previous records, comprising six drug-related cases and four criminal cases, while investigators are still trying to establish why he fled from police.
The case is being investigated under Sections 186, 279 and 307 of the Penal Code, Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960, as well as Sections 39B and 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Shamsudin said an application to remand the suspect was scheduled to be made today at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.
He urged the public not to spread inaccurate information or speculate about the incident, and asked anyone with information to contact the Petaling Jaya district police operations room at 03-7966 2222.
