India’s Para Asian Games contingent highlighted the country’s ancient legacy at Sunday’s opening ceremony, with athletes donning ceremonial blazers designed around motifs drawn from 5,000 years of civilisation.

More than 100 Indian athletes marched at the ceremony, with Paralympic medallists sprinter Simran Sharma and badminton player Pramod Bhagat heading the group.

The blazers worn by each of the athletes displayed prints inspired by ancient seals from the Indus Valley, reflecting the script as well as artistic symbols associated with one of the world’s earliest civilisations.

The design also included a nod to “SaptSindhu” placed on the collar, paying tribute to the land of seven rivers and the Saraswati, while the Indian flag also featured prominently on the blazer’s front pocket.

“Team India walked out wearing more than just ceremonial dress -- they wore 5,000 years of civilisation. The Indian contingent’s ceremonial blazer is a tribute to our heritage,” the Paralympic Committee of India said in a statament.

India has sent a 281-member delegation to the Games, which will run until October 24 featuring around 3,000 athletes from 45 countries. India’s contingent includes 168 athletes, 112 men and 56 women, who will compete across 11 sports.
