Rivers United better than last season – Finidi

Rivers United coach Finidi George believes his current squad is stronger than last season’s, following the club’s impressive start to the Nigeria Premier Football League campaign, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

 The Port Harcourt-based side have made a strong start domestically, despite their disappointing exit in the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.

 After four matches in the NPFL this season, Finidi’s men have accumulated 10 points, remaining unbeaten and dropping points only in their 1-1 draw against Nasarawa United in Lafia.

 They have won their other three games, all at home, with their most recent victory being a 5-0 thrashing of Kun Khalifat on Thursday.

 Despite their early continental setback, Rivers United have maintained their momentum in the league, recording three wins and a draw. Finidi believes the quality of his new signings has strengthened the squad this season.

 “The players we signed this season are much better than last season,” Finidi said after their last game.

 “I think the players are beginning to get it right, and I believe it will continue this way,” he said.

 Rivers United finished second behind Rangers International last season.

 With a demanding run of fixtures ahead, Finidi also emphasised the importance of giving his players adequate rest to maintain their fitness.

 The Pride of Rivers will travel to Katsina to face newly promoted Barau FC on Monday before taking on Katsina United on Wednesday. They will then return home to host Ikorodu City on Sunday.

 “We are having a couple of games coming up, and it’s going to be a tasking week or two weeks for the players. So, I think it’s not bad to rest them so they will be fresh for the next game. It’s going to be hectic for the players,” Finidi added.
