Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo + Juliet' Officially Returns 30 Years Later With a Brand-New Release

A cinematic obsessive with the filmic palate of a starving raccoon, Rob London will watch pretty much anything once. With a mind like a steel trap, he's an endless fount of movie and TV trivia, borne from a misspent youth of watching monster movies on TV, perusing the sun-faded goods at the local video rental shop, and staining his fingers with ink from the Video Movie Guide. Areas of interest include science fiction, film noir, horror flicks, '70s disaster pictures, Bond movies, '90s action, giant robots, dinosaurs, super heroes, and the exuberantly schlocky output of Cannon Films. He also enjoys both Star Trek and Star Wars when they're good, and maybe even more when they're bad. As a Canadian, he also has a vested interest in Canadian movies and TV shows, especially the cheesier ones dubbed "Canuxploitation."

An expert on Marvel Comics, he has also written for the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, and is a member of the Marvel Research Team. He can frequently be found pontificating on comic-book continuity or bemoaning the misfortunes of the Toronto Maple Leafs on his Twitter account.

30 years ago, cinematic visionary Baz Luhrmann brought the worlds of William Shakespeare to life like never before in Romeo + Juliet. Now, you can experience that movie like never before: in concert. In 2027, the film is coming to the stage in a unique combination of cinema and music, courtesy of GEA Live, in collaboration with Disney Concerts and Luhrmann, with tickets going on sale this week.

A retelling of the classic Shakespeare tale, with its Elizabethan dialogue and characters transported to 1990s "Verona Beach," 1996's Romeo + Juliet starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes as the title star-crossed lovers. Meeting by chance at a party, they defy their warring families, the Montagues and the Capulets, and fall in love. However, when Romeo's best friend, Mercutio (Harold Perrineau), is slain by Juliet's cousin, Tybalt (John Leguizamo), their romance becomes a tragedy, and both become sacrifices of their families' enmity. It also stars Miriam Margolyes, Pete Postlethwaite, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Paul Sorvino, and Paul Rudd. The film became a massive success, making stars out of DiCaprio and Danes, and its soundtrack, loaded with contemporary pop music, went quadruple platinum; it remains a mainstay of modern Shakespeare adaptations to this day.

Now, Romeo + Juliet In Concert will kick off a series of live performances worldwide next year. With the movie projected on a cinema screen, a hybrid ensemble (consisting of rock and orchestral musicians with vocals, electronics, and a DJ) will perform the film's score and music live in sync with the full film. That includes songs like Garbage's #1 Crush," Des'ree's "Kissing You," and, most famously, The Cardigans' "Lovefool." Where Will 'Romeo + Juliet In Concert' Be Performed?

The concert will have its world premiere in Luhrmann's home country of Australia, in the Sydney Opera House, on September 29. The world tour will then kick off on January 9 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and wind its way through 14 countries and three continents, before concluding on November 8 in Stockholm, Sweden. 67 performances have been announced so far, with more to come.
