Tourist sites shut in Flores after quake leaves 68 dead, damage

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Some major tourist destinations across Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara have been temporarily closed following a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake that killed at least 68 people and damaged scores of hotels and public infrastructure.

Berton Panjaitan, acting head of communication for the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), said in Jakarta on Tuesday that closures were enacted to conduct structural safety inspections and repair damaged facilities.

"Several tourist attractions are currently temporarily closed, such as Goa Rangko in West Manggarai, Wae Rebo Traditional Village in Manggarai, and Kelimutu National Park in Ende," Panjaitan said.

Regional authorities will issue reopening updates once safety verifications are complete.

Meanwhile, officials confirmed that Komodo National Park and its surrounding marine areas remain fully operational and undamaged.

Initial BNPB assessments report minor damage at eight tourist sites across the island.

The hospitality sector also took a heavy hit: two hotels and three homestays suffered severe damage, while 10 hotels and five homestays sustained minor structural impacts, particularly in Nagekeo Regency.

"Ensuring the safety and security of all tourists, as well as the adequacy of tourism infrastructure, is our priority," Panjaitan added.

The 7.7 magnitude quake has forced over 5,000 residents into emergency shelters or temporary displacement. Field reports show 914 houses severely destroyed, alongside damage to 93 schools, 36 health facilities, and 38 government offices.

As of August 17, the death toll reached 68, with Manggarai and East Manggarai regencies recording the highest casualties.
