Disney’s Revived Gargoyles Series Is A 10/10 Return To Form

Translate

Mark has been a comic book journalist for over 15 years and has interviewed comic book creators like Gail Simone and Caspar Wijngaard. And when he's not writing, he's working on beating his record of 1,200 comics read in a year.

Gargoyles fans, listen up: this iconic franchise made a quiet return, but you won't find it on any streaming service; instead, you'll find it in comic books. One of the many beautiful things about comic books is that they can tell stories from franchises that go beyond their original medium. Dynamite Entertainment has been doing this for a while with Disney properties. Among them is the popular 1990s cartoon, Gargoyles.

In 2023, Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman returned to the franchise to write a comic book series that continued where the program left off. It was a brilliant idea since he was one of the brains behind the franchise's birth. However, there was no guarantee that the comic book would be as good as the original.

Just because a person builds something special doesn’t mean they can recreate the magic years later. Creators of TV shows, movies, and comic books have attempted to return to a project, only to fail in the end. Thankfully, Greg Weisman has kept the spirit of the show alive and then some with the main title (Disney's Gargoyles) and the miniseries starring Demona.

Demona Is a Fantastic Addition to the Gargoyles Franchise (& The Perfect Starting Point)

Gargoyles: Demona begins in 1063 A.D., before her people were betrayed. It continues by following Demona and her “daughter” Angelika as they travel the world. This may seem like a normal story of two people without a clan, but that’s only part of the tale. What makes this special is seeing a caring side of Demona, while she remains kind of evil.

Angelika was a noble person who always did what was right. She kept a smile on her face and did many heroic deeds. She even met someone whom she eventually settled down with. Meanwhile, Demona continued to lie, cheat, and steal. However, no matter how many bad things Demona did, she tried her hardest to do right by Angelika.

Readers will leave this miniseries comparing Demona and Angelika’s relationship to Mystique and Rogue. It was very much an overprotective mother who believed no one was worthy of her daughter. This leads to a few fights between them over Angelika not wanting the “gift” of immortality her mother was trying to give her. In the end, Angelika dies, which shows why Demona is bitter after a thousand years of immortal life.

Comic book fans don’t need to know anything about the Gargoyles franchise to enjoy these five issues. In fact, a person could read this series and immediately jump into volume one of Greg Wesiman’s Gargoyles. It’s what I did, and it was a fantastic reintroduction to the universe.

Dynamite's Main Gargoyles Series Is PURE Perfection

Thanks to Disney+, people who haven’t seen the original Gargoyles can watch all 78 episodes. If you don’t have the streaming service or the time to consume hours of TV, that’s not a big deal. Readers don’t need to watch the show to get into the comic book. Volume 1 does an amazing job explaining everything you need to know and continues the franchise’s storylines perfectly.

Like most beginnings of established projects, the series starts by explaining the lore. While the narrator (Elisa Maza) covers the key facts, the action starts immediately. After the excitement ends, the characters are introduced in an entertaining way that highlights each of their personalities.

A comic book fan couldn't ask for a better start to an established franchise. Gargoyles doesn't waste time on unnecessary details. Instead, the creative team focuses on what's happening now and what matters: developing the characters and telling a great story.

One good thing about getting into Disney’s Gargoyles now is that you won’t have to wait like other fans had to. Volume one took a three-year hiatus, so anyone keeping up with the series had to wait until its recent return. That means it’s the perfect time to binge the series. And if you’re bold enough, watch the Disney+ Gargoyles show to be more informed than the average fan.
