Charlton Athletic Agree Loan Deal For Okonkwo

Translate

English Championship club Charlton Athletic have agreed a deal to sign Nigeria international goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo on a season-long loan from Wrexham.

This is according to European transfer expert and Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Okonkwo, who has just one year remaining on his contract at Wrexham, is set to become a free agent next summer, and the temporary move allows the him to seek regular first-team football after being displaced in the Wrexham pecking order.

The 24-year-old first joined Wrexham on loan from Arsenal in September 2023 and quickly established himself as first-choice goalkeeper.

He played a pivotal role in consecutive promotions, helping the club rise from League Two to the Championship (second division of English football).

Wrexham made the move permanent in June 2024 on a three-year deal after his Arsenal contract expired.

This summer, Wrexham signed Anthony Patterson from Sunderland in a club-record deal reportedly worth around £8 million. Combined with the presence of experienced goalkeeper Danny Ward, Okonkwo dropped to third choice.

He has been seeking a loan move to regain regular playing time, with interest also reported from Derby County and Bolton Wanderers earlier in the summer transfer window.

Reports indicated that Okonkwo’s substantial wages (around £1 million per year) had complicated potential loan negotiations, but Charlton have now agreed terms for the season-long switch.

Okonkwo came through the Arsenal academy. He gained experience on loan at Crewe Alexandra and Austrian side Sturm Graz before his successful spell at Wrexham.

Across his time with the Red Dragons (loan and permanent), he has made over 100 appearances and kept a strong number of clean sheets while contributing to two promotions.

Okonkwo switched international allegiance from England youth teams to Nigeria and earned his first senior caps for the Super Eagles in the 2026 Unity Cup, where he was in goal in the 2-0 and 3-0 wins against Zimbabwe and Jamaica respectively.
