Andy Reid had no excuses after the Kansas City Chiefs suffered their first defeat of the 2026 season. The head coach watched his team struggle at both ends of the field as the Seattle Seahawks handed them a 20-3 loss at Lumen Field on Sunday. Patrick Mahomes and Kenneth Walker III struggled against the Seahawks, and missed field goals made a comeback harder. For Reid, the performance was not about blaming one player. He pointed to problems across the entire team and accepted responsibility for the result.
Andy Reid's honest reaction to Kansas City Chiefs' loss
“All three phases, we struggled,” Reid told reporters after the game. “So we've got to do better, and that's my responsibility. I take full responsibility for this. We've got to play better as a team.”

The Chiefs entered Seattle with a perfect 5-0 record, but their offense never found a consistent way to break through the Seahawks' defense. Mahomes completed 19 of 33 passes for 165 yards and threw an interception without recording a touchdown. Kansas City finished with just 213 total yards, a sharp drop from its average of 414 yards entering the game.
Reid admitted that the team had plenty to fix, particularly on third downs. Kansas City converted only three of its 11 attempts, while Seattle moved the chains on 11 of 16 chances. Those missed opportunities kept the Chiefs' offense off the field and gave the Seahawks control of the contest.
But the head coach backed his players to respond to the setback.
“We've got to learn from it,” Reid said. “I mentioned to you guys before, win or lose, you've got to learn and get better. We'll all do that. I'll start with myself, and we'll work our way through it and make sure that we teach.”
Chiefs face a test against Denver after Seattle defeat
One of the biggest problems for Kansas City was its inability to get Walker going on the ground. The running back, who joined the Chiefs after earning Super Bowl MVP honors with Seattle last season, managed only 36 rushing yards on 14 carries. He added 21 receiving yards on four catches.
Mahomes acknowledged that the passing game needed to do more to ease the pressure on Walker. The Seahawks' defence repeatedly crowded the line of scrimmage, making it difficult for Kansas City to establish its usual balance.
Harrison Butker's missed kicks added to the frustration. The kicker fell short on a 58-yard attempt before missing a 45-yard field goal wide right in the fourth quarter, when Kansas City had a chance to cut the deficit to one score.
The defeat left the Chiefs at 5-1, but they remained atop the AFC West by half a game. Their next challenge will come against the Denver Broncos, who entered the week with a 5-2 record. Reid expects his players to learn from the loss and prepare for that divisional matchup, not to get too lost on what happened with the Seahawks.
