‘Law & Order: SVU’ Is Officially Taking Over Apple TV Ahead of Christopher Meloni’s Return

Law & Order: SVU is bringing back one of its greatest detectives ever at a truly historic moment. The character first appeared on the long-running crime drama in 1999, when the show debuted on NBC, and remained a mainstay for the first 12 seasons before exiting ahead of Season 13. As a result, he was written out of the show until returning as a guest in Season 22, in the episode that served as a lead-in for Law & Order: Organized Crime.

Detective Elliot Stabler, portrayed by Christopher Meloni, has officially been confirmed to return in the upcoming Season 28 of the police procedural, which premieres in October. Meloni was last seen on SVU at the start of Season 27, when Stabler and his former partner, Captain Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay), met up outside a wake for their former boss, Captain Donald Cragen (Dann Florek). In the brief and emotionally charged scene, Stabler tells Benson, his longtime friend with whom his friendship had sometimes bordered on romantic, that he loved her.

Meloni's return was recently confirmed by co-star Hargitay, who shared two photos on Instagram featuring both of them on the set of SVU, hinting that the actor had returned to film the show's 600th episode. The first photo, which showed Hargitay pointing to the back of Meloni's head, was captioned "WHO DAT?" while the second selfie showed the two smiling side by side and was captioned: "Happy 600…" This suggests that Meloni's appearance may not last as long as fans hope on SVU, given that he is set to appear in probably only the milestone 600th episode.

As a possible result of Meloni's impending return, Law & Order: SVU is seeing an impressive resurgence on streaming and PVOD. The long-running series is currently in the Top 10 of Apple TV's global PVOD rankings, standing proud amongst titans like Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. The series is performing particularly well in territories like Australia and the United Kingdom.

Meloni last played Stabler as a full-time series regular in 2025, when his spin-off series, Organized Crime, concluded. The seventh series in the Law & Order franchise ran for five seasons, from April 1, 2021, on NBC through June 12, 2025, later shifting to Peacock for Season 5. In April 2026, NBCUniversal officially canceled Organized Crime for several reasons, including ongoing behind-the-scenes creative issues and a difficult transition to streaming. Since then, Meloni has taken on guest-star roles, allowing him to appear in the Law & Order universe for special events and crossovers while remaining part of the franchise.
