Indonesia encourages ASEAN to be more effective ahead of 60th year

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia will continue to push the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to become more effective, adaptive and impactful as the bloc approaches its 60th anniversary in 2027, Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir stated.
Speaking at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta during his inaugural press address following the ministerial handover from Sugiono, Monday (October 12), Arrmanatha emphasized that for nearly six decades, ASEAN has served as the anchor of Indonesia's foreign policy in maintaining regional peace and stability - affirming that this position "will not change.”
He noted that Indonesia maintains a strong strategic interest in fostering a stable, peaceful and predictable Southeast Asian region to ensure sustainable economic growth for all member states.
To achieve this, Arrmanatha stressed the need to strengthen ASEAN so it can deliver concrete strategic results, build mutual trust and directly benefit the people of the region.
"ASEAN must also contribute to strengthening the architecture of the Indo-Pacific region, thereby ensuring shared security, shared stability and prosperity for all," he added.
In line with this objective, Indonesia will advocate for a more inclusive ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) to enhance confidence-building among member countries.
Furthermore, Indonesia will continue leveraging platforms such as ASEAN Plus Three, the East Asia Summit and partnerships with dialogue partners as the primary drivers of regional cooperation.
Highlighting the upcoming opportunity for an Indonesian representative to assume the role of ASEAN Secretary-General in 2028, Arrmanatha affirmed that Indonesia will utilize the leadership position to help direct and strengthen future ASEAN collaboration.
Beyond regional affairs, Arrmanatha pledged to champion the interests of developing nations across various multilateral forums, including the G20, BRICS, MIKTA, OIC and D-8, while reinforcing national resilience to support global peace efforts.
"Indonesia is strong at home, trusted in the region and heard in the world," Arrmanatha stated in concluding his policy vision as foreign minister.
