Thai women’s table tennis team lose to India in quarterfinal

TOYOTA, Japan — 22 September 2026, Thailand’s women’s table tennis team were eliminated in the Asian Games quarterfinals after losing to India at Sky Hall Toyota in the Nagoya-Aichi 2026 Asian Games.

The quarterfinal winner would advance to the semifinals and secure at least a bronze medal.

Thailand took an early lead after Orawan Paranang rallied to beat Sreeja Akula 3-2 in the opening match, winning 7-11, 1-11, 11-9, 11-6, 12-10.

Suthasini Sawettabut then lost 2-3 to Yashaswini Ghorpade, with the Indian winning 11-8, 5-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-9, leaving the tie level at 1-1.

In the third match, Jinnipa Sawettabut defeated Diya Chitale 3-2, winning 11-7, 5-11, 7-11, 11-7, 13-11 to put Thailand back in front at 2-1.

Orawan then faced Ghorpade again but lost 0-3, 5-11, 8-11, 9-11, bringing the tie level at 2-2 and sending it to a decisive fifth match.

Suthasini faced Akula in the deciding match. She lost 1-3, with Akula winning 9-11, 11-6, 10-12, 8-11.

The defeat ended Thailand’s women’s team campaign at the quarterfinal stage, while India advanced to the semifinals and secured at least a bronze medal.
