Indonesia, Microsoft discuss continued investment strategy

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid met with a top Microsoft executive in New York on Wednesday (Sept 23) at local time to discuss the tech giant's continued investment strategy in Indonesia.

In 2024, Microsoft announced a commitment to invest about US$1.7 billion in Indonesia. Meutya emphasised the investment must deliver long-term benefits for the country's technological capacity.

"We hope Indonesia will not only serve as a key market for Microsoft, but also as a strategic hub for digital infrastructure and innovation in the region," Meutya said in a statement received here on Friday.

Indonesia's growing digital economy requires an infrastructure that is increasingly resilient, inclusive, and capable of meeting the needs of both the public and industry, she said.

Therefore, the government hopes Microsoft views Indonesia as a regional hub for digital infrastructure development and innovation, rather than just a market.

In addition, for the national capacity building, a collaboration with Microsoft is expected to open up more opportunities for Indonesian institutions, developers, and tech companies to build their capabilities and leverage global technological expertise.

The partnership spans artificial intelligence, cloud technology, cybersecurity, and responsible tech governance.

Indonesia is also pushing to align digital skills development with industry demand, ensuring that local talent gains access to job opportunities and career advancement in the digital sector.

"We aim not only to increase the number of digitally skilled individuals, but also to cultivate more Indonesian developers, innovators, engineers, and digital leaders," Meutya explained.

On AI development, the minister outlined Indonesia's steps to create a national AI governance framework through a draft Presidential Regulation on the AI Roadmap and Ethics.

The framework aims to provide clear guidelines for ethical, safe, inclusive, and responsible AI development.

"We want to ensure the regulation does not impede innovation, but rather provides the necessary protection and certainty for AI development to run responsibly," she said.

Discussions also covered online child protection and the implementation of Government Regulation Number 17 of 2025 on Electronic System Governance for Child Protection (PP TUNAS).

Meutya called on Microsoft to strengthen collaboration by adopting safety-by-design principles and advancing responsible technology development.

"We want to deepen Microsoft's commitment to Indonesia through digital infrastructure investments, technology and knowledge transfer, digital talent development, and stronger collaboration to create a safer digital environment for Indonesian children," she said.

Indonesia's partnership with the tech giant is expected to contribute to its Golden Indonesia 2045 vision by boosting the nation's digital capability and competitiveness.
