Espanyol unveil Sarabia as new coach after Gonzalez sacking

Translate

Eder Sarabia was unveiled as Espanyol’s new coach on Wednesday, a day after Manolo Gonzalez was sacked following the club’s first round Copa del Rey defeat by fourth division Sestao River.

Sarabia, 46, cut his coaching teeth as assistant to Quique Setien at Las Palmas, Betis and Barcelona, before moving into a head coach role with Andorra and then Elche, whom he guided into LaLiga.

He has his work cut out with Espanyol, the Barcelona-based club currently sitting 18th in LaLiga, having mustered just eight points from 10 matches this season.

Gonzalez had been Espanyol’s coach since March 2024 and had taken the team back to the LaLiga, where he kept them for the last two seasons.

He was the third coach in Spain’s elite football division to be sacked this season after Luis Miguel Ramis at Osasuna and Carlos Corberan at Valencia.
