Euromatch NPFL: Coaches, Officials Face Sanctions Over Disparaging Interviews

The Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, has warned coaches, club officials and other stakeholders against making disparaging public comments about the league and its match officials.

The league said the advisory was necessary to ensure that grievances over officiating are communicated through the appropriate channels rather than through public statements that could damage the image of the NPFL.

NPFL Frowns At Disparaging Comments

NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Ayo Abdulrahman, said the warning had become necessary as the 2026/27 season progresses, particularly following a trending video interview involving Sporting Lagos FC coach, Jeffery Buter.

According to Abdulrahman, Buter’s comments questioned the integrity of the centre referee following Sporting Lagos’ Matchday 6 encounter against Barau FC in Lagos.

In a memo addressed to all clubs, Abdulrahman said the league was concerned about statements capable of damaging its reputation and discouraging existing and potential partners.

Clubs Urged to Use Official Channels

The NPFL COO reminded clubs that established channels are available for reporting complaints and concerns relating to match officiating.

“All Clubs are hereby reminded of Appendix B, Rule 7 and Section A, Rule 5.5.2 of the NPFL Framework and Rules 2026/2027, which prohibit public criticism and disparaging statements against the League and its officials by players, club coaches and officials,” the memo stated.

Abdulrahman urged clubs to ensure that their coaches, managers and officials refrain from making statements capable of bringing the league and its match officials into disrepute.

He warned that any further breach would attract disciplinary action in accordance with the NPFL Framework and Rules.
