Public holidays in 2027: Turn three leave days into TEN

All the public holidays in 2027 have been confirmed and South Africa gets 12 statutory days under the Public Holidays Act.

But there’s extra good news, because thanks to two of them falling on a Sunday, they’re observed to Monday. Therefore, South Africans are actually getting 14 public holidays in 2027.

And that’s before you even start getting clever with your leave.

Unfortunately – and there’s always one – Workers’ Day lands on a Saturday in 2027, with no extra compensation.

The same applies to Christmas Day in 2027, so they’re effectively gobbled up …

PUBLIC HOLIDAYS IN 2027 CONFIRMED

Nevertheless, here’s the full confirmed list of public holidays in 2027.

Below that we’ll show you exactly how to turn those annual leave days into the most efficient holiday periods possible:

• New Year’s Day: Friday 1 January
• Human Rights Day (observed): Monday 22 March
• Good Friday: Friday 26 March
• Family Day: Monday 29 March
• Freedom Day: Tuesday 27 April
• Workers’ Day: Saturday 1 May (lost)
• Youth Day: Wednesday 16 June
• National Women’s Day: Monday 9 August
• Heritage Day: Friday 24 September
• Day of Reconciliation: Thursday 16 December
• Christmas Day: Saturday 25 December (lost)
• Day of Goodwill (observed): Monday 27 December

SAVE YOUR LEAVE DAYS FOR THE GAPS

Due to the confirmed public holidays in 2027, you can now use your leave days exclusively on normal workdays sitting in between holidays and weekends.

For example, from Human Rights Day observed on Monday, 22 March, it’s not long till Good Friday lands on 26 March, and Family Day on Monday, 29 March.

Take three leave days – namely Tuesday 23, Wednesday 24 and Thursday, 25 March – and you have 10 consecutive days of leave.

Then South Africa’s public holidays in 2027 tend to thin out in the middle of the year. But remember, it’s about bridging the gap to the nearest weekend. Therefore:

• Youth Day (Wednesday, 16 June) can be maximised either side, namely Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 or Thursday 17 and Friday, 18 June.
• Women’s Day (Monday, 9 August) is already a free long weekend.
• Heritage Day (Friday, 24 September) is already a free long weekend.

There are also two single-day bridges to be built for two 4-day long weekends in 2027:

• Monday, 26 April to meet Freedom Day (Tuesday, 27 April).
• Friday, 17 December to meet Reconciliation Day (Thursday, 16 December)
