DOT eyes bringing Mindanao into PH tourism circuit

PAGADIAN CITY — The Department of Tourism (DoT) is keen on bringing Mindanao into the country’s tourism circuit, citing the island’s stable security conditions, rich cultural heritage, unique culinary offerings, and ecotourism destinations and adventures.

Tourism Assistant Secretary Ferdinand Jose Bagcal recently led a DoT team in conducting a comprehensive validation of tourism attractions in the Zamboanga Peninsula, the results of which will be included in the national travel and tourism circuit.

He noted that the initiative, which included site validations in Zamboanga del Sur, aims to uncover new destinations beyond the country’s famed beaches.

“We want to focus on Mindanao this time because it is rich in exceptional tourist assets. Our goal is to link these destinations into cohesive circuits (in the Philippines) that travelers can easily navigate,” Bagcal explained.

Bagcal expressed optimism about this city’s tourism potential, citing the newly opened Pagadian City Water Park along the boulevard as a promising development.

“Pagadian is something waiting to be discovered. It has immense potential to emerge as a major destination,” he said.

The team’s itinerary included visits to the Sto. Niño Cathedral, the Tourism Boat, the Regional Government Center, the Provincial Government Center, the sandbar called Puting Balas, and Bakilid Resort.

Bagcal stressed that culture and heritage form a core part of the validation, with the delegation engaging the Subanen indigenous community in the towns of Kumalarang and Lakewood.

In Kumalarang, the team observed traditional weaving and handicraft-making and met with local officials led by Mayor Ruel Molina.

The delegation also visited Lakewood, home to the province’s largest freshwater lake, spanning 800 hectares at the foot of Mt. Serongan and Mt. Imbing. The site is being positioned as a scenic ecotourism destination.

Sara Mae Lee Monroy, DoT’s lead project officer for cultural tourism, emphasized the richness of Zamboanga del Sur’s tourism assets.

“We saw traditions, performances, and crafts that offer immersive experiences. Even simple mat weaving is something travelers should witness firsthand,” she said.

Monroy stressed that showcasing Mindanao’s warmth and diversity is vital to counter negative perceptions.

“Mindanao is safe, relaxing, and full of unique food and adventure. There is more to the Philippines than Boracay, Davao, or Bohol—Zamboanga Peninsula deserves a place on the tourism map,” she said.

Bagcal commended the local government units for investing in tourism infrastructure and product development, also citing the willingness of the tri-people to develop tourism in the area. /mcm
