Steam is forever giving away games for free, so much so that one has to wonder how it manages to make any money. Of course, the vast majority of the time, these (very) deep discounts are a consequence of publishers excitedly celebrating an anniversary, or because they're financing their production through other means like microtransactions. Nevertheless, it is always great for the consumer to get yet another bout of free games on Steam, especially when they're of excellent quality.
The last round of free Steam games were all pretty great, including a competitive first-person shooter with an old-school PlayStation aesthetic and an emotionally charged narrative experience with a unique twist. This time, there aren't just a handful of potentially good free Steam games on offer, but instead a whopping 22 titles, all of which are yours to keep forever. It's a seriously impressive offering, and the perfect starting point for anyone looking to expand their Steam library with a few more titles.
The many great free Steam games that have been released recently are often small indies with lofty ambitions or merely a simple hook that'll keep you entertained for a few hours. However, that isn't the case with today's offering, at least technically. That's because the latest free Steam game is the critically acclaimed Cartomancy Anthology, a massive collaborative project that initially raised $30,000 on Kickstarter and features 22 unique games all connected by its central tarot theme.
The game, which unfortunately failed to raise enough money to be ported to consoles, launched on Steam and itch.io back in 2022, where it managed to garner a respectable number of glowing reviews, resulting in an impressive 94% positive score on Steam. When it launched, the collection cost $24.99, and that was the case until very recently. However, out of the blue, Cartomancy Anthology's price was slashed by 100% permanently, making it a completely free Steam game that's yours to keep forever.
There don't appear to be any strings attached in this case, no retrospectively added microtransactions or weird cash shops. Instead, you're getting a full free Steam game, complete with all 22 of its original games, each of which was developed by an entirely different studio and offers a completely unique experience. They aren't simple minigames either, but fully-fledged games with interesting hooks that will have you gripped for some time. The closest comparison would be the equally brilliant UFO 50 that launched to critical acclaim back in 2024.
If you want to try Cartomancy Anthology, you simply need to head over to its Steam store page and download it for free. Alternatively, you can head to its itch.io page and get it for free there. Either way, it's yours to keep forever, so you won't need to rush to complete it. This is obviously a rather nice surprise, although a curious one considering there has been no update on why Cartomancy Anthology has become a free game. Nevertheless, one shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, especially a free Steam game as good as this.
