Watch: The shocking moment Andros Townsend was run over by pitch roller in Thailand

Former England winger Andros Townsend was fortunate to avoid injury after being run over by a pitch roller in a shocking accident that occurred in Thailand.

The ex-Tottenham and Crystal Palace star was warming up ahead of PT Prachuap’s Thai League 1 match against Pattani FC at Rainbow Stadium on Saturday, when he was struck by the roller.

The driver was unable to stop and hit Townsend, who had just flicked a ball away and was unaware of the roller in his path, knocking him down and running over his legs before finally coming to a halt.

His team-mates were visibly shocked, but thankfully the 35-year-old - who was momentarily stuck beneath the roller - appeared to be unhurt and later came on as a stoppage-time substitute in a game that PT Prachuap won 3-0 against opponents who played the last 25 minutes of the match with 10 men.

Townsend later reposted a video on social media which was captioned: “Just another day in Thai Football [he was fine!]”

He later wrote on his own Instagram story: “It turns out Stoke away wasn't so bad after all. Swipe to see why.”

One social media user described Townsend as “The King of Memes in Thai League history”, to which he replied “trust me” with four laughing emojis.

Townsend has played in Thailand since last year, initially signing for Kanchanaburi Power before their relegation from the top-flight last season led him to join PT Prachuap in August.

He previously spent one season in Turkey with Antalyaspor, having left English football in 2024 following a brief spell at Luton.

Townsend also played for Everton and Newcastle as well as Crystal Palace and Tottenham, where he began his career and made 93 total senior appearances across all competitions after being sent for loan spells at Yeovil, Leyton Orient, MK Dons, Ipswich, Watford, Millwall, Leeds, Birmingham and QPR.

He also earned 13 senior England caps between 2013-16, scoring three times.
