KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 — Borrowers facing difficulties settling their National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loan arrears are welcomed to come forward to negotiate for loan restructuring or apply for deferment according to permitted flexibilities.

The Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE), via a written reply published on the Parliament website yesterday, stated that the government is always mindful of the constraints faced by borrowers who are genuinely burdened in settling their loans.

“The total loan repayment arrears for the agency reached RM10.7 billion involving 1.16 million borrowers as of August 31, 2026,” according to the ministry.

The statement was issued in response to a question by Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun (PH-Port Dickson) regarding the latest total amount of PTPTN debt and the number of borrowers with arrears.

Various initiatives have been and will continue to be implemented to ensure the long-term fund sustainability of PTPTN’s business model, among which include strengthening loan management by improving loan terms and conditions to be more targeted towards those in need based on the agency’s capability.

“In addition, the effectiveness and efficiency of loan repayment collection will be enhanced through the implementation of enforcement and strategic cooperation with government and corporate agencies,” the ministry added. — Bernama
