Minister for Sport Andrea Abodi insists he has ‘no enemies’ and he is ‘surprised’ Italy delegation chief Diana Bianchedi resigned due to his comments. ‘I’m wary of those who lack self-reflection.’
The latest controversy to erupt between the Minister, the FIGC (Italian Football Federation) and CONI (Italian Olympic Committee) revolves around Bianchedi.

A former Olympic fencing champion and vice president of the CONI, she was appointed delegation chief for the Italy football team two months ago.
It is a role formerly held by Gigi Buffon and effectively amounts to support linking the players to the coaching staff and directors.
Abodi responds to Bianchedi resignation

She resigned last night in direct response to comments made by Abodi, who complained Bianchedi had fundamental disagreements with the CONI President Luciano Buonfiglio over several issues.
“The vice presidents have the right and duty to express their opinion, but if it is always contrary, they ought to make a choice,” said the Minister for Sport.
“That role was given to them as part of a relationship of trust. It’s sobering that two such iconic figures, entrusted with a leading role on trust, are unable to demonstrate their faith consistently.
“These are choices they will make internally, but as a general rule, relationships like this don’t last long.”

That was bitterly criticised today by FIGC President Giovanni Malagò, who called it “unconventional interference” from the Minister.
“I do not have any enemies, nor do I want or seek them,” replied Abodi today.
“But I do have the sacrosanct right to express a respectful opinion. I am growing wary of those who only judge others and entirely lack self-reflection.
“I read and re-read my comments and I cannot see anything that could be considered a lack of respect towards her values. Unless, of course, we do not have the same values.
“I was surprised that Bianchedi resigned, everyone has the right to their own sensibilities and opinions. I didn’t think it would go this far.”
