Terry Pratchett Estate Announces Special Edition of Iconic Discworld Novel

A new special edition of Night Watch will celebrate what many consider the greatest of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. The new edition just went up for pre-order, and has been celebrated by the Terry Pratchett Estate.

Pratchett's Discworld is a sprawling fictional universe which pastiches traditional fantasy tropes and folklore, contrasting dragons, vampires and Lovecraftian entities against practical, grounded characters.

Ask a Discworld fan for the franchise's top ten and you'll get a different list every time - not surprising with forty-one mainline novels. However, ask them for the best of all time, and nine times out of ten, you'll be given the exact same title...

New Edition of Terry Pratchett's Night Watch Up for Pre-Order

The Terry Pratchett Estate recently revealed a special edition of the acclaimed Night Watch, with a new cover by Joe Bundock. Bundock is the winner of the 2026 Penguin Cover Design Award. The clothbound hardback special edition will feature foil detailing and printed endpapers, coming October 29, 2026.

The cover features Pratchett's turtle god Great A'Tuin as it carries the Discworld across space on its back, with the illustration showing a foreboding storm over Ankh-Morpork - a sprawling Metropolis that's home to various Discworld characters, including Night Watch's Commander Sam Vimes of the City Watch.

The up-and-coming artist won with artwork inspired by medieval illuminated manuscripts and linocut printmaking, with this special edition of Night Watch acting as his first cover commission. It's a gorgeous edition of the book that's widely considered Terry Pratchett's masterwork. Speaking on the opportunity, Bundock told the Terry Pratchett Estate:

Knowing my artwork will illustrate the work of someone as monumental to fantasy as Sir Terry Pratchett is an honour beyond words. I hope the design serves as a tribute to such a brilliant author and series.

Why Terry Pratchett's Night Watch Is So Beloved

Night Watch follows recurring character Sam Vimes as he pursues serial killer Carcer Dun across Ankh-Morpork, with the two being caught up in the magical storm depicted on Bundock's cover. Vimes and Carcer are thrown decades into the past, just before the events of a bloody rebellion that set the course of a young Vimes' life.

When Carcer murders Vimes' former mentor John Keel, Vimes is forced to take on Keel's identity, guiding his younger self and contending with his new role in the bloodbath to come. The novel is one of Pratchett's most human and affecting, as the younger Vimes' hope for revolution is contrasted against his older self's knowledge of the future.

What would run through the streets soon enough wouldn't be a revolution or a riot. It'd be people who were frightened and panicking. It was what happened when the machinery of city life faltered, the wheels stopped turning and all the little rules broke down. And when that happened, humans were worse than sheep. Sheep just ran; they didn't try to bite the sheep next to them.

One of Pratchett's most celebrated characters, Vimes' ruminations are the source of many of Discworld's most trenchant quotes. Indeed, Vimes' iconic speculation about cheap boots costing more than expensive ones in the longterm inspired a successful campaign in Pratchett's native UK to review how inflation is measured per household, with the 'Vimes Boot Index' comparing prices of everyday goods to track how inflation disproportionately affects low-income households.

A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

There's A Lot More Discworld On the Horizon

The new edition of Night Watch stands at the precipice of a new era of Discworld, with Doubleday poised to release a new 'shared universe' of graphic novel adaptations, starting with Thief of Time and Monstrous Regiment in 2027, as well as The Wee Free Men from Puffin, adapted by Rhianna Pratchett.

This year has also seen the release of two new Discworld boardgames - Kill Sam Vimes! and Readers Digested - and publisher Transworld giving away 10,000 copies of Unseen Academicals to combat child illiteracy.
