Indonesia targets up to 6.5 percent export growth this year

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Trade Minister Budi Santoso expressed strong optimism that Indonesia will achieve its annual export growth target of 5.5 to 6.5 percent, supported by a solid 4.7 percent expansion in national exports during the January–August 2026 period.

Speaking in Jakarta on Friday, Budi acknowledged that despite temporary trade deficits between May and June—stemming from the ripple effects of March oil price spikes—the ministry remains confident in reaching its year-end goals.

To maintain this positive momentum, the Trade Ministry is actively utilizing its 46 representative offices, comprising trade attachés and Indonesian Trade Promotion Centers (ITPCs) across 33 countries.

"I often tell our representatives—the ITPCs and trade attachés—that they essentially act as sales agents for our exporters," Budi explained.

“As Trade Minister, I serve primarily as a coordinator. Therefore, the core task of the ITPCs is to secure buyers for our exporters,” he added.

The ministry's growth strategy focuses on three core priorities: securing the domestic market, expanding export markets, and transitioning products from local to global standards.

Between January and August 2026, total Indonesian exports reached US$193.64 billion. The manufacturing sector served as the primary engine, generating US$159.55 billion—or 82.40 percent—of the aggregate export value.

Under the domestic market security program, cooperation with retail associations and national shopping initiatives drove local product penetration to Rp259.3 trillion (approximately US$14.41 billion) between January and October 2026, while 6,383 MSMEs received guidance to partner with modern retailers.

Meanwhile, international market expansion efforts—highlighted by the 41st Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI) held from October 14–18, 2026—generated potential transactions amounting to US$22.94 billion, with MSME potential transactions rising to US$510.79 million.

Additionally, the "From Local to Global" initiative has fostered export readiness through multiple clusters, including business matchmaking sessions yielding US$361.55 million, the development of 787 export villages and 121 small and medium-sized industry hubs, the integration of 1,203 MSMEs into modern retail networks as well as university partnerships that generated US$24.57 million in potential transactions at TEI.
