Govt moves early to secure food supplies for year-end demand

Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan said the government is strengthening food supply readiness for Christmas 2026 and New Year 2027 through early preparations for logistics, distribution, and reserves.
In a meeting discussing food issues on Monday (October 26), he conveyed that anticipatory measures are being taken early since the end-of-year period will coincide with the fasting month of Ramadan in February 2027.
"We will face Christmas and New Year in December, and soon, Ramadan in February 2027. We need early preparation to have sufficient time to anticipate all eventualities," he noted.
The government is prioritizing adequate food supplies and stronger distribution networks to meet public demand during periods of increased consumption.
The meeting also discussed public concerns over price fluctuations in several commodities, including cayenne pepper and red chili peppers, Hasan added.
The government has also accelerated rice assistance distribution to help recipients cope with current food prices and maintain their purchasing power to meet daily needs.
The rice food aid was provided to 33.2 million beneficiary families (KPM) from deciles one to four throughout Indonesia.
Each recipient family received 10 kilograms of rice per month for the period of October, November, and December 2026, totaling 30 kilograms.
The total food aid allocation prepared by the government reaches approximately 1 million tons of rice through coordination with the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Food Agency (Bapanas), and the State Logistics Agency (Bulog).
In addition, the government also accelerated the distribution of rice under the Food Supply and Price Stabilization (SPHP) program to maintain affordable rice prices in the market, set at a price of Rp12,500 (US$0.69) per kilogram.
Hasan stressed that measures to strengthen food supplies are underway to stabilize prices, improve distribution, and ensure reliable supplies for the public through the year-end period and beyond.
