Govt taps trend forecasting to boost traditional textiles market value

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ministry of Creative Economy is encouraging the use of trend forecasting and intellectual property (IP) protection to boost the market value and global competitiveness of fashion products made from traditional Indonesian textiles.
The ministry's Director of Fashion, Iffah Sa'aidah, underscored that trend forecasting is a key tool for designers to transform traditional textiles, or wastra Nusantara, into ready-to-wear pieces tailored to international market tastes while retaining their cultural identity.
“The Creative Economy Ministry recognizes the role of trend forecasting in promoting traditional textiles, and we are offering support to ensure that local designers’ products are not only globally competitive but also protected through IP rights,” she said in a statement on Tuesday.
She added that leveraging trend forecasting helps designers craft pieces that carry both cultural significance and market relevance, thereby increasing their global value and appeal.
Furthermore, the ministry is promoting IP protection for fashion works by facilitating the registration of trademarks, design copyrights, and motifs.
The move is deemed critical to provide legal protection and certainty for designers when their products start to be marketed abroad, while increasing the economic value of the creative assets.
Aligning with this vision, the Indonesian Fashion Chamber (IFC)—a strategic partner for the upcoming IN2MOTIONFEST x Jakarta Muslim Fashion Week (JMFW)—emphasizes that trend forecasting must go beyond the runway and translate into commercial readiness.
Ali Charisma, Project Officer for IN2MOTIONFEST x JMFW, said the curation process for the modest fashion platform follows international standards to ensure showcased collections are ready for the global market, both through business-to-business (B2B) and retail channels.
“Using trend forecasting as inspiration, designers' work is directed to focus not only on runway aesthetics, but also on commercial readiness, including costing, pricing, and digital merchandising,” Ali remarked.
He added that this business-oriented strategy is delivered through a series of masterclasses, seminars, workshops, industry forums, and summits organized as part of IN2MOTIONFEST x JMFW to be held in Jakarta on October 14–18, 2026.
