Indonesia fast-tracks 5 livestock zones to boost food production

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman announced that the government is fast-tracking the development of five integrated livestock zones targeted for completion by 2027 to boost national production of chicken, eggs and milk.

The initial development of these five zones across Lampung, East Java, South Sulawesi, West Nusa Tenggara and Gorontalo is backed by an allocation of Rp2.2 trillion (approximately US$122.9 million).

"The government is accelerating the development of an integrated livestock ecosystem—spanning from upstream to downstream—to strengthen food security and ensure the availability of chicken, eggs and milk to meet national needs," Minister Amran said in a statement here on Monday.

The minister noted that the initiative aligns with President Prabowo Subianto's directive to build a robust livestock supply chain.

The project forms part of a broader government budget allocation of approximately Rp17 trillion (US$949.7 million) dedicated to strengthening livestock ecosystems nationwide.

According to Amran, physical construction is already underway following the completion of administrative and budgetary approvals.

"Drilling has already begun. The target is to finish next year. The administration is settled, and the budget is ready," Amran said.

The five livestock zones are designed as end-to-end ecosystems comprising animal feed mills, day-old chick (DOC) breeding facilities, poultry farms, egg production sites, and dairy cattle processing facilities.

By establishing feed mills near major local corn-producing hubs, such as Bone and Soppeng in South Sulawesi, the government aims to optimize logistics and reduce freight costs by eliminating the need to transport raw materials to major cities like Surabaya or Jakarta for processing.

Additionally, these integrated facilities are designed to directly support the supply chain for the government's Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program, which will serve as the primary off-taker for the livestock commodities produced.

"Consuming milk, eggs, chicken, and so on—that is the President's vision. We want our future generation to be an intelligent one, paving the way to a 'Golden Indonesia,'" Minister Amran concluded.
