We do not support our own, but we watch horrible Hollywood movies – Yvonne Okoro

Translate

Ghanaian actor and film producer Yvonne Okoro has bemoaned the lack of support for local films.

Speaking to Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, Yvonne said that while Ghanaian film producers were doing their best to survive, local audiences often looked for faults in their work rather than supporting their productions.

According to her, Ghanaians would watch and enjoy poor-quality films from other countries but criticise similar productions made by their compatriots.

“We do not support our own. Everything Ghanaian, we see it as sub-standard. And when you say this, people get offended by it, but it’s the truth,” she said.

“Like, you do a movie, and people are like, will the movie be nice? You are watching horrible movies. I am sorry, some Hollywood movies are horrible. You watch it and clap.

"You are watching some of the YouTube videos from my people in Nigeria, and you think it’s fantastic. But then let it be a Ghanaian who does a horrible movie, and they will say we don’t know how to do good movies.

"It’s horrible. And when we do good movies, they will go like, ‘I didn’t know this was there oo.’ I have been marketing for how long now; you didn’t know this was there. They just won’t come and watch it,” she added.

Yvonne made the remarks during a discussion on the current state of Ghana’s film industry and what could be done to improve it.

Yvonne has built a career spanning acting and film production, featuring in several Ghanaian and Ghanaian-Nigerian productions.

Her acting credits include Beyonce: The President’s Daughter, The Return of Beyonce, Single Six, Contract, Potomanto, Rebecca, Ghana Must Go, Like Cotton Twines and Fix Us.

She has also appeared in the Adams Apples film series, which explores the lives and relationships of a group of friends.

As a producer, Yvonne has worked on films including Contract and Ghana Must Go, demonstrating her involvement in both the creative and production sides of the industry.

She recently starred in Agency for the Dead, a new film by Ghanaian filmmaker Shirley Frimpong-Manso, hitting Silverbird Cinemas on 30th October 2026.
