3. Scavengers strip Lagos bridges, homes in widespread theft

Metal scavengers, popularly known as ‘iron condemned’ pickers, are increasingly stripping Lagos bridges, old buildings, construction sites and even occupied homes of valuable materials. The scavengers remove reinforcement rods, roofing sheets and electrical wiring, selling the materials as scrap while leaving structures damaged and weakened.
