BI moves to strengthen halal value chain for global market

Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA) - Bank Indonesia (BI) is strengthening Indonesia's halal value chain from production to distribution, aiming to boost the competitiveness of domestic halal products and expand their reach into global markets.

BI Governor Destry Damayanti noted that the move is a core direction of the central bank's Islamic economic and financial policy, designed to turn the country's vast potential into tangible economic impact.

"We are strengthening an integrated and competitive halal value chain ecosystem, from supply and demand to supporting institutions," she said at the opening of the 2026 Java Sharia Economic Festival (Fesyar) in Surabaya, East Java, on Saturday.

She said developing the supply chain cannot solely rely on product growth but also requires an interconnected ecosystem that allows business owners, markets, supporting institutions, and the financing sector to grow together.

Damayanti said that Indonesia already has a diverse range of halal products, including food and modest fashion, while Muslim-friendly tourism is also beginning to grow, highlighting the need for a strong ecosystem to connect these opportunities.

To boost this ecosystem, BI is encouraging the expansion of Islamic financing by partnering with the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), the National Sharia Board (DSN), academia, and the Financial Services Authority (OJK) to create financial products tailored for businesses.

"The limited variety of financial products remains an issue, which is why we must continue pushing and developing Islamic financial offerings," she stated.

She emphasized that expanding financing options and access is critical to ensuring businesses within the halal value chain can secure the capital required to scale up and boost competitiveness.

In addition to financing, BI will also expand Islamic financial literacy and inclusion so that people and businesses that already understand sharia principles can access available financial products more easily.
