Mayorkun celebrates a decade in music with 'Home Training'

Translate

Nigerian singr-songwriter Mayorkun has released a new single, Home Training, along with its official music video. The release coincides with a milestone: the singer is celebrating 10 years in music, a career that began in 2016 with his debut single Eleko.

Home Training was produced by his long time collaborator, Fresh VDM. Mayorkun says the song is about the kind of love that brings out a different side of you. Sometimes, he explains, you have to know when to behave and when to leave your upbringing at the door. The title plays on a familiar Nigerian phrase for the manners and values taught at home.

The single is the opening track of his upcoming EP, Long Live, The Mayor!, with his earlier release Kaluba set to close the project. The EP announcement turns the anniversary into a larger campaign, and Home Training serves as the first look at what is coming.

The single follows a busy stretch for the singer. He recently featured on Bumpy Ride, track 10 on Harmonize’s 14-track album, and released Kaluba before that. Those moves have kept him visible ahead of the EP.

Ten years in, Mayorkun has covered a lot of ground. He began under Davido’s DMW label, released the albums The Mayor of Lagos in 2018 and Back in Office in 2021, and has kept up a steady run of melodic Afrobeats singles.
