At UN, Malaysia outlines three priorities to strengthen global peacebuilding

NEW YORK, Sept 25 — Malaysia has outlined three key priorities to strengthen efforts to build lasting global peace that benefit the international community.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the first priority was to ensure that peacebuilding efforts are nationally owned and led, meaningful and inclusive, BuletinTV3 reported. 

“Malaysia supports nationally owned and nationally led prevention and peacebuilding strategies, complemented by preventive diplomacy and mediation efforts,” he said.

He said this in his intervention at the Ministerial-Level Meeting of the Peacebuilding Commission held in conjunction with the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) here today.

Mohamad added that peacebuilding must ensure the full, equal and safe participation of women.

Malaysia hosted the 2025 Asean Summit on Women, Peace and Security in Kuala Lumpur.

“The summit reaffirmed the importance of women’s leadership in peacebuilding and called for stronger measures to prevent and address violence against women,” he said.

Mohamad said the second priority was for the work of the Peacebuilding Commission to be translated into coordinated action.

“Development and peace reinforce each other.

“Sustainable development can address the root causes of conflict, while stability enables development to grow and take root,” he said.

In this regard, Malaysia supports stronger cooperation between the commission and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) to improve coordination across development, humanitarian and peacebuilding efforts.

“This cooperation is essential to ensure that international support is responsive to national priorities, mutually reinforcing and capable of delivering greater impact on the ground,” he said.

On the third priority, Mohamad said peacebuilding must strengthen national capacity and human capital.

“Through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme, Malaysia shares its development experience and expertise with developing countries, including countries recovering from conflict,” he said.

He stressed that peacebuilding could not wait until conflict erupted or until a conflict had ended.

It was an ongoing process involving efforts to build and sustain peaceful and inclusive societies, resilient communities and stable economies.
