Ukraine's Zelensky says Russia already violated Trump-brokered ceasefire proposal
Zelensky later reiterated Ukraine's support for de-escalation, emphasizing that "it is important that Russia support it as well."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday that Russia violated the ceasefire US President Donald Trump proposed on Sunday, CNN reported.
According to the report, Zelensky noted that Moscow "launched a targeted strike on a power plant in Kharkiv, causing further damage to our energy system," and further noted additional strikes on Monday involving Russian drones.
Trump claimed on Sunday that both Ukraine and Russia had agreed to what he called an "energy ceasefire," saying at the time that it took effect immediately.
Zelensky says Ukraine abiding by ceasefire terms despite Russian aggression
Despite the attacks, “Ukraine has not carried out strikes on Russian oil refineries or the energy sector in general for the two days since the American president announced an energy ceasefire," Zelensky wrote in an X/Twitter post on Tuesday.
"But Russia did not heed the American President,” he emphasized in the post. “During this time, the Russians have attacked both our energy facilities and our critical infrastructure, sending absolutely clear signals that they have no intention of refraining from strikes on Ukraine."
"Our position remains unchanged: Ukraine is ready for reciprocal steps toward de-escalation,” he added.
The White House has not yet responded to a CNN request for comment on how the agreement was reached and what the next steps may be.
In a later X post, Zelensky reiterated Ukraine's support for de-escalation, emphasizing that "it is important that Russia support it as well."
"We are awaiting details from the American side," wrote Zelensky. "For our part, Ukraine always FULLY supports steps toward de-escalation, the protection of lives, and the decisions needed to end the war and guarantee lasting peace."
