ENG vs PAK, 3rd Test: Cox, Root fifties help England seal whitewash over Pakistan

Captain Joe Root and Jordan Cox scored half-centuries as England defeated Pakistan by eight wickets to complete a series whitewash at Edgbaston, Birmingham on Saturday, September 12.

Set a target of 130 overnight thanks to debutant Razaullah’s heroics, England was dealt to early blows as Mohammed Abbas dismissed openers Ben Duckett and Emilio Gay for nought in the first over. 

However, Root and Cox weathered the early storm in overcast conditions to add a partnership of 128 that helped the side confirm victory.

Root received two reprieves on his way to a fifty from 57 balls. He chopped on against Mohammed Ali only for the third umpire to call for a no-ball, and edged Abbas through the slip cordon on 34, but recovered to see his side home.

Cox, meanwhile, continued his impressive form at number three with a calm half-century from 61 balls from the other end.

The result was confirmed with a single to Cox off the bowling of Mohammad Imran Randhawa.

England’s next assignment sees it travel to South Africa for three Tests in December, while Pakistan hosts Sri Lanka for two Tests in November.
