Indonesia steps up campaign for UN Security Council seat for 2029-2030

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia will step up its diplomatic campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2029–2030 term during the 81st UN General Assembly session in New York.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang stated that Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono, who is leading the national delegation, will host a dedicated diplomatic reception in New York to build support among member states.

"The Indonesian government will host a diplomatic reception in New York as part of the campaign for Indonesia's candidacy as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2029–2030 term," Yvonne said during a press briefing in Jakarta on Thursday.

She explained that Indonesia's bid centers on offering tangible contributions to international peace-building and strengthening multilateral cooperation.

Jakarta intends to act as a bridge-builder, facilitating dialogue, fostering shared positions and advocating for a more responsive and effective UNSC.

Key priorities for Indonesia's proposed tenure include peace operations, preventive diplomacy, conflict prevention and the protection of civilians in conflict zones.

"We will champion the voices and priorities of the Global South. We aim not only to represent the Global South but also to ensure that the perspectives of developing nations are heard when Indonesia serves as a non-permanent member of the UNSC,” Yvonne emphasized.

She added that the bid represents a continuation of Indonesia's long-standing global commitments, stressing that the nation "seeks to serve within the UNSC, not merely to hold the position.”

The formal campaign launch follows Foreign Minister Sugiono's announcement during his Annual Press Statement on January 14, 2026.

Indonesia has previously held a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for four terms: 1973–1974, 1995–1996, 2007–2008 and 2019–2021. The nation also held the UNSC presidency in August 2020.
