Unhealthy air quality readings recorded at three Penang locations

Translate

GEORGE TOWN: Three of four automatic air quality monitoring stations in Penang recorded unhealthy Air Pollution Index (API) readings today.

State Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo said Seberang Prai recorded the highest API reading at 155 as of 7am, followed by Minden at 154 and Seberang Jaya at 152.

Meanwhile, the monitoring station in Balik Pulau recorded moderate air quality, with an API reading of 92.

Sundarajoo wants the public, particularly children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with heart or respiratory conditions, to take precautions and minimise prolonged outdoor activities if air quality remains poor.

"People experiencing symptoms such as coughing, difficulty breathing or respiratory discomfort are advised to limit outdoor physical activity and seek medical attention if symptoms persist," he said in a statement.

Sundarajoo also called on all parties to refrain from open burning or activities that could worsen air pollution.

He stressed that public cooperation was crucial in maintaining environmental quality.

The state government, through relevant agencies, will continue monitoring API trends alongside the Department of Environment (DoE) via the MyEQMS and APIMS systems to keep the public updated.
