Double boost for Kaizer Chiefs as Mayo and Phili edge closer to returns

Translate

Kaizer Chiefs could welcome the return of two injured players in the coming weeks, with Khanyisa Mayo and Langelihle Phili both edging closer to a comeback.

Mayo had to undergo a hernia operation, forcing him to miss the start of the 2026/27 PSL campaign. However, there are indications that the striker could return to the Amakhosi matchday squad this month after recently starting training with the first team at Naturena.

The 28-year-old has struggled to make an impact since joining Chiefs on loan from CR Belouizdad. His move was made permanent in July, but he is yet to make an appearance for the club this season.

Another player nearing a return is Phili, who joined Kaizer Chiefs from Stellenbosch FC.

The winger suffered an injury shortly after featuring in Kaizer Chiefs’ 1-1 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns on 15 August 2026. Phili scored in the match before being forced off.

Amakhosi head coach Fernando Da Cruz subsequently confirmed that the winger would be sidelined for approximately eight weeks while undergoing rehabilitation.

Kaizer Chiefs looking to return to winning ways

The recent FIFA international break could work in Phili’s favour, giving him additional time to recover and gradually return to full training before Chiefs resume competitive action.

With Phili initially expected to be sidelined for around two months, the 21-year-old could make his return in mid-to-late October, depending on the progress of his rehabilitation and his fitness levels.

The potential return of both players would provide Kaizer Chiefs with a timely boost as they look to improve their fortunes in the early stages of the season.
