DOTr offers free rides on select Metro Manila routes amid rains

MANILA, Philippines —  The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Wednesday announced free rides along selected routes in Metro Manila to ensure that passengers have access to transportation amid rains brought by the southwest monsoon, or habagat.

The DOTr and other government agencies deployed vehicles along the Divisoria-Monumento, Kalentong-Pasig, and Lawton-PITX routes, and vice versa.

“We have deployed DOTr vehicle assets to assist our passengers. We also extend our gratitude to the various government agencies that have joined us in providing free rides,” Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said in a social media post.

“We’ll make sure that our commuters have access to transportation and that their journeys are not disrupted,” he added.

The state weather bureau placed Metro Manila and five other areas in Luzon under a yellow rainfall warning due to the effects of habagat.

In its Heavy Rainfall Warning No. 18 issued at 11 a.m., the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the following areas were under the yellow warning level:

• Metro Manila: Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela, Quezon City, Makati, Mandaluyong, San Juan, Pasay, Marikina, and Manila
• Bataan
• Rizal: Rodriguez and San Mateo
• Zambales: Olongapo, Subic, Castillejos, San Marcelino, San Narciso, San Antonio, Iba, Botolan, Cabangan, Palauig, San Felipe, Masinloc, and Candelaria
• Bulacan: Meycauayan and Obando
• Pampanga: Floridablanca and Lubao

Areas under yellow warning tend to experience rainfall between 7.5 millimeters and 15 mm within one hour and can continue in the next two hours. /das
