Govt urges airlines to fulfill passenger rights amid eruption closures

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Transportation Ministry urged commercial airlines to fulfill passenger rights and deliver comprehensive handling services following extended airport closures caused by the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.

The ministry’s Director General of Civil Aviation Lukman F. Laisa emphasized in Jakarta on Sunday that air carriers are legally bound to support stranded travelers in accordance with established aviation consumer protection regulations.

"Airlines are required to provide services and handling to affected passengers, including timely status updates and rebooking or refund options in accordance with applicable regulations,” Lukman said in a statement.

To prevent severe terminal overcrowding, the ministry advised prospective passengers not to travel to affected airports during the disruption period and to monitor official airline channels for schedule updates.

Air traffic provider AirNav Indonesia issued multiple Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) on Sunday, extending operational closures across key regional hubs due to hazardous volcanic ash dispersion:

• Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK): Closure extended until 5:30 p.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB) based on (NOTAM A3346/26).
• Halim Perdanakusuma Airport (HLP): Closure extended until 6:00 p.m. WIB (NOTAM A3347/26).
• Radin Inten II Airport (TKG, Lampung): Closure extended until 6:00 p.m. WIB (NOTAM B1125/26).
• Budiarto Airport (Curug): Closure extended until 5:30 p.m. WIB (NOTAM C1079/26).
• Pondok Cabe Airport (Jakarta): Closed until 2:00 p.m. WIB (NOTAM C1080/26).
• Husein Sastranegara Airport (Bandung): Closed until 4:00 p.m. WIB (NOTAM C1086/26).

Lukman stressed that aviation safety and security remain the paramount priority in all operational assessments.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation is maintaining continuous real-time coordination with the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), airport operators as well as air navigation authorities to dynamically manage operational recovery as atmospheric conditions improve.
