Rivers United have accepted the sanctions imposed on the club by the organisers of the domestic top flight following alleged breaches of the league’s rules and framework, particularly those relating to broadcasting, Completesports.com reports.

The Pride of Rivers were handed a ₦15 million fine by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following incidents during their Matchday 11 home fixture against Rangers International. The encounter ended in a 1-1 draw.

Rivers United Accept NPFL Sanctions Without Appeal

On Thursday, 5 November 2026, the club issued a statement confirming its acceptance of the NPFL sanctions without seeking to appeal the decision.

The statement, signed by Charles Mayuku, Media Director of Rivers United, was made available to Completesports.com.

“The club confirms that all actions taken were preceded by appropriate engagements aimed at ensuring orderly conduct of the match and protecting the interest of all stakeholders,” the statement read in part.

It continued: “Rivers United remains fully committed to the highest standards of professionalism. We’ll continue to uphold the rules of the league and respect its regulatory, commercial and broadcasting frameworks.”l

The club also stressed the importance of effective collaboration between the league, participating clubs and broadcast partners, particularly regarding match scheduling and timely communication to prevent disruptions and safeguard the integrity of the competition.

“Effective collaboration between the League, clubs and broadcast partners is essential, particularly in match scheduling. Clear and timely communication is necessary to prevent disruptions and safeguard the integrity of the competition.”

Pride of Rivers Demand Fair Broadcast Coverage For All NPFL Clubs

Rivers United, through the statement, also advocated a fair and balanced distribution of live match coverage among all 20 participating clubs, arguing that selective coverage undermines the development of the league and the interest of Nigerian football fans.

“The Media and Broadcast Initiative agreement with MBI was intended to ensure comprehensive coverage of league fixtures, including matches such as Niger Tornadoes FC vs Barau FC and others on the broadcast schedule. This commitment was not fulfilled. No justification, apology or sanctions have followed.

“A breach of any agreement remains a breach, regardless of the party responsible. Accountability must apply equally,” the club demanded.
