MOROKA SWALLOWS SC
“We have a vision to make this one of the biggest sports clubs on the African continent,” Mokoena said. “We are currently engaging with the City of Johannesburg in terms of finding venues we would use, especially in Soweto.”
He added: “We have more than one code. We have football. We have Basketball and we have Netball at the moment. Football being the core business. And the epicenter of this whole story… It is the big part of the heritage of this club.
“We will add other codes like running and rugby,” Mokoena added.
MORE ON THE CLUB
Swallows is one Mzansi’s oldest and iconic clubs with rich history. Fondly knowns as the Dube Birds, the club was formed Soweto back in 1974. Alongside Orlando Pirates, Swallows shaped township football and later professional football in South Africa.
Recent history has been dark. The club was relegated in 2015 and further declines through the divisions. A community-driven revival later helped the Dube Birds return to the Premier Soccer League (PSL), but renewed financial difficulties and player strikes in late 2023 derailed their progress. In 2024, the club sold its top-flight status to Marumo Gallants.
