‘Black Mirror’ creator is working on “absurd comedy” crime thriller ‘Blackmere’

The creator of Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker, has unveiled the title and cast of his new series, Blackmere.

Unveiled at an event for Netflix on Thursday (September 24), the show stars Paddy Considine, Lena Headey, and Rory Kinnear. Variety reports that the show’s synopsis describes it as an “absurd comedy disguised as an incredibly serious crime thriller,” before revealing the details of the plot: “Tormented Detective John Blackmere (Considine) leaves the rain-soaked Northern city of Bleakford for London to avenge his partner’s death and catch a ritualistic serial killer before they run out of victims.” A tongue-in-cheek advisory note said that the show “Contains blood and frowning.”

Netflix also released the first images for the project, which can be viewed below. The series is scheduled for release in 2027 on an as-yet-unannounced date.

When the project was announced last year, Brooker said: “I’m beyond thrilled to be saying these words for the press release. I’ve dreamt of providing a quote ever since I was a young foetus, and now here I am doing it. I’d pinch myself, but like all of us, I’m terrified that if I do that, I might wake up and discover 2025 has all been a magical dream. Please watch my show. I am begging you.”

Brooker and Netflix’s collaborations go back to the third season of Black Mirror, which was produced by Channel 4 until moving to the streamer. He has also made specials for the service, as well as the forthcoming mockumentary Cunk On Cinema, featuring the satirical character Philomena Cunk (played by Diane Morgan), which is a co-production with the BBC. Recently, the interviewees for Cunk On Cinema were announced, which include action director Michael Bay and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Last month, Charlie Brooker revealed that season eight of Black Mirror had started shooting, with the creator of the show saying that it will “be more ‘Black Mirror’ than ever.”
